Junk a car without a title in Chicago
A missing title doesn't end the conversation with Junk Car Company. Tell us which papers you do have, like a bill of sale, the registration or an insurance card, and we check them on the call against what Illinois allows for a scrap sale. The tow costs you nothing, and payment comes in the same visit as the pickup.
Free towing. Payment at the curb in cash or by app transfer. Often a same-day pickup.

Can I junk my car in Chicago without a title?
It's still worth asking us. Pick "No" for the title question on Junk Car Company's form and list the papers you do have: a bill of sale, the registration or an insurance card. Which of them counts is set by Illinois rules for scrap sales, not by us, so we confirm yours on the call before anything is towed.
Start with the papers you do have
A missing title usually means one of two things: it got lost in a move, or it never made it into your hands at all. Either way, start by gathering whatever you do have and telling us about it. These are the papers people most often find, and what to check on each.
| Paper | What to check on it |
|---|---|
| Bill of sale | Your name as the buyer, the seller’s name, and ideally the year, make and VIN |
| Registration card | Your name, this car’s plate and its VIN |
| Insurance card | Your name as the insured, with this car listed |
We don’t promise that any one of these is enough on its own. The state sets what counts in a scrap sale, and the answer can turn on the car and the paper, so we go through yours on the call before anything is towed.
Ready the paperwork first
Match the VIN first. The number on your paper should match the one on the car, which you can read through the windshield on the driver’s side of the dashboard or on the sticker in the driver’s door jamb. A mismatch is worth sorting out early.
Then clear out the car. Check the trunk, under the seats and the spare-tire well. Garage openers, parking permits and sunglasses get left behind all the time.
Take the plates off, too. They’re registered to you, not to the car, and our guide to plates after junking covers what to do with them.
What Illinois law says, briefly
The Illinois Vehicle Code tells licensed scrap processors which proof of ownership to collect when they take a vehicle: a certificate of title, a salvage certificate, a junking certificate, a Secretary of State junking manifest, a certificate of purchase or “other similar documentary proof of ownership.” The statute doesn’t define that last phrase, which is exactly why we confirm your papers on the call instead of promising in advance. Our guide on junking a car without a title in Illinois quotes the statute and links to it. Neither that guide nor this page is legal advice.
The surest route: a duplicate title
If the car is titled in your name, replacing the title settles the question. The Illinois Secretary of State charges $50 for a duplicate title, and its FAQ says a title takes about three to four weeks to issue once the office receives the application. Some facilities offer expedited service for $30 more. The steps are in our guide to a lost title in Illinois. You can send us the form while you wait and tell us the duplicate is on its way. Our offer has no expiry date, so the wait doesn’t cost you the offer.
The day the truck comes
Once we’ve confirmed your papers on the call, we set the pickup. Same-day pickup is often possible, the tow costs nothing, and payment changes hands in the same visit that collects the car. The full sequence is in how junking a car works in Illinois.
When your situation is different
If the title or registration is in someone else’s name, start with junking a car whose title isn’t in your name. If a lender is still on the title, read junking a car with a lien first. For everything else, junk your car in Chicago with the form on this page and tell us what you have.
